Twenty-five Ukrainian Candians tell their stories of survival during the Holodomor--death inflicted by starvation--a genocide of Ukrainian people engineered by Joseph Stalin during 1932 and 1933. Stalin was determined to suppress Ukrainian nationhood once and for all through the decimation of Ukraine's elites and its rural population. Most of the survivors in the film endured this atrocity as children. Many were orphaned, some lost their whole families. Through compelling eyewitness accounts, the film brings into focus a pivotal and little-known period in history, the consequences of which continues to reverberate today.
