Hogwarts Legacy is a 2023 action role-playing game developed by Avalanche Software and published by Warner Bros. Games under its Portkey Games label. The game is set in the Wizarding World universe, based on the Harry Potter novels, and was released for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Windows, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, and Nintendo Switch in 2023.
Taking place prior to the events of the novels, the player controls a student at the titular Hogwarts School of Witchcraft and Wizardry in 1899, who subsequently learns to wield different magical abilities and objects, aided by other students and professors.
Hogwarts Legacy is Avalanche's first release since their acquisition by Warner Bros. in 2017. Development began in 2018, without the direct involvement of series creator J.K. Rowling. Announced in 2020, the game was subject to delays, first to 2022 and later to its final release date. Before its announcement, pre-release gameplay footage was leaked onto the internet in 2018.
