Did hobos really eat leather pants?
The answer might surprise you! In this episode, we take a funny but historically accurate look at Leather Breeches — an old Appalachian and Depression-era dish made from dried green beans that were strung up like “pants” and cooked with bacon grease.

Hobos riding the rails, mountain families, and woodsmen all depended on meals like this to get through hard times. Today, we recreate this real poor man’s meal just as it might have been cooked over a 1930s campfire: dried beans, lard or bacon grease, salt, a cast iron pot, and a little ingenuity.

Along the way, we explore:

Why they were called “leather pants”

How dried beans were preserved before refrigeration

Why this simple food kept people alive during the Depression

How hobos and woodsmen adapted basic ingredients for survival

If you enjoy Great Depression cooking, hobo history, classic bushcraft, or forgotten survival foods, this episode brings all of that together with a fun twist.
