From Class One Model Works: These cars were either built new or rebuilt from existing autoracks. As early as July 1990, railroads were testing the use of tri-level auto racks that were 20 ft., 2 in. high compared to most racks that were approximately 19 ft., 0 in. high. The 20 ft., 2 in. height matched the maximum height for the double-stack intermodal cars loaded with high-cube containers. The demand for the 20 ft., 2 in. rack came from Chrysler that wanted to load minivans in the B- and C-decks. With the 19 ft., 0 in. auto racks, Chrysler was only able to load minivans in the C-deck (top deck).
