"A common sailor? Oh, fie!" Straight from the vinyl of this stellar 1960 recording, Captain Corcoran's words still amuse. 'Pinafore' was the first of Gilbert & Sullivan's successes, and is the third of Gilbert & Sullivan's 'Savoy' operas, preceded by 'Trial By Jury' and 'The Sorcerer'. It opened on May 25th, 1878 at London's Opera Comique Theatre, and ran for 571 performances. Hugely successful, it is popular to this day. Gilbert's satiric wit adroitly pierced institutions and attitudes, while Sullivan's luminous music is--well, ageless.
