ETJ 22: A Conversation with Andrew & Jamie Peterson About Marriage, Family, Relationships, and Faith
updated
Prophetic Grace can be a game changer with how you communicate with your spouse.
It’s giving your spouse credit for who they’re going to be even though it may not necessarily be a present reality.
Nobody is perfect, right?
But we all have the potential to be better, right?
Prophetic Grace sees that potential and speaks into it—with the hopes that it will take root and grow in the life and actions of your spouse.
I am not always a good man. Like every other man on the face of the planet, I have bad days, but when my wife consistently is telling me that she sees me as a good man, a respectable man, and a hard worker, I am 1000% more likely to become the man my wife sees me as.
This is not lying.
Don’t say it if it’s not true, or if you see no potential for it to be true.
But, if you see it in your spouse and want it to become real, speak that grace over them prophetically.

My experience working with couples buried in the rubble of a broken covenant due to an affair and my work with them as they try to dig out and rebuild a marriage has taught me some of the keys to surviving an affair.
1. Repentance
For a marriage to survive an affair, the spouse who cheated needs to repent. This looks like sorrow, grief, brokenness, and a commitment to never cheat again. If the spouse who cheated is unrepentant, any steps towards true reconciliation are illusory.
2. End It Cold Turkey
When you are dealing with a person who has had an affair, you’re dealing with someone who—like a drug addict—will lie, cheat, and steal to keep the “high” going. They will do whatever it takes to get the next “hit.”
Unrepentant cheaters will create secret email accounts, arrange clandestine rendezvouses, risk their jobs and reputations, jeopardize their children’s well-being, and do pretty much anything to keep the affair going.
No more phone calls, meetings, emails, texts…no more anything! If you hope to survive, all personal and unprofessional contact with the other person must end.
3. No More Secrets
To survive an affair, there must be a new-found openness and honesty in the marriage. Your spouse needs to have access to your email accounts, social media, and cell phone. Your spouse needs to have his or her questions answered. They need to hear whatever they need to hear until they’ve decided they’ve heard enough.
4. Grieve
When your spouse is found to be having an affair–to the offended spouse–it is as if your spouse has died. The spouse you knew before the affair is dead and gone and–if you are going to survive–you need to allow yourself to grieve.
Grief does not play fair. Grief is a profound experience that does not visit briefly or gently. Grief leaves a wound that never quite goes away. But serves to create a longing that will only be satisfied by an eternity with Jesus. This is one of the big reasons it takes years to recover from an affair.
5. Talk About It
It happened. Don’t act like it didn’t. Not dealing with it is an illusion. The pain, confusion, and heartache aren’t going anywhere and you need to talk about it.
Significant healing will come through communication. It has to be the right time and right place. And the spouse with the moral “high-ground” (the innocent party) gets to decide when and where that is.
6. Get Counseling
You will need the help and perspective of a skilled counselor to guide you through this. I believe it’s naive to think you can just find your way out of the mess called “adultery” on your own. If you do, it will be a much longer journey than it needs to be.
7. Loose Lips Sink Ships
Too many people involved in your recovery effort will only make it more difficult for your marriage to survive.
Keep it between you, your spouse, your counselor, and God. Surviving an affair is messy. Don’t make it worse by dumping your “mess” on a bunch of people standing on the periphery of your relationship.
8. Make Love
Yes, one of the purposes of sex is to make us one and unified with our spouse. Adultery breaks the covenant, so—if you and your spouse are both willing to try to restore your marriage—you need to start having sex sooner rather than later.
Now, there will be tears and possibly some anger mixed in with those first few sexual encounters, so be prepared, but you will find the first manifestations of healing mixed in there as well. This can’t be forced or contrived or faked in any way.
9. Get Intentional About Your Relationship
Many relationships go over the cliff called “adultery” because the couple began taking each other for granted and had put their marriage on “cruise control.”
If you are going to survive an affair you need to have a plan and that plan needs to include new mutual goals, new mutual relationship priorities, healthier moral boundaries, regular date nights, time for developing your relationship with Christ as individuals and couples, and time to bond through communication.
10. Grow in Your Commitment to Christ
All of the couples I know who have survived an affair got serious about developing and deepening their relationships with the Lord both individually and as a couple. A marriage built on the “rock” of God’s word is more apt to survive than one built on the “sand.” Which is important, because it rains on everyone.

Our identity identifies important “property lines” that should never be trespassed, so…it’s important for us to invest significant time in clarifying who we are.
It’s easier to have your boundaries trespassed upon when your “property lines” aren’t clear, firm, and unmovable. But, if—because you know who you are—your “property lines” ARE clear, firm, and unmovable, you will be less vulnerable to trespassers!

Men, I want to honor you now...and your superpower.
Btw...these are general principles and most likely will not apply in every specific situation.
In my experience, men have the ability to quickly fix any problem to which they are paying attention.
Men tend to think more compartmentally.
They see things in the moment and as not necessarily connected to any of the surrounding moments--which can provide laser focus. Therefore, this is why...generally speaking..men tend to excel in situations where an important decision needs to be made very quickly or after a lot of focused analysis (military exercises, engineering, construction, automotive repair). This is also why we men tend to fail in seeing the big picture (which is why my wife's superpower is such an incredible blessing to me!).
With this in mind, men, here's what the woman in your life wants you to know...
1. Knowing you can (most times) quickly fix any problem upon which you are focused and to which you are paying attention. You must PAY ATTENTION if there's any hope of the problem in the relationship/home being fixed.
2. If you are not paying attention, the only logical conclusion your partner can make is that you don't care about the problem being fixed--or, more importantly, the person asking you to fix it.
3. Even though, men, you view conversations as problems to be fixed, the woman in your life doesn't need you to fix every problem. She does need you to listen. (Women, this is why a good tool to use in a conversation may be to say, "I don't need you to fix this. I need you to listen.").
#communicationtools #relationshipcoaching #relationshipadvice #marriagecoaching #marriagetips #marriageadvice #whatshewants #shorts #short #hersuperpower #marriagewisdom
Your superpower positions you to have innate wisdom and perspective that--when recognized, seen, honored, and tapped into by those around you--can make this world a better place.
Men, don't curse this superpower--especially when it makes it difficult for her to move on from a pain/hurt as quickly as you can. I'll talk about men's superpower in an upcoming Reel, but for now I'll just say, Men...if you are in conflict with the woman in your life and your feel like saying, "Why do you keep bringing this up?" Don't say that! Only an idiot says that!🙂
Instead, recognize that the pain--of which she is referring--is a distant memory for you, but it is a present reality for her.
She can't just forget it easily and move on because it is ever before her--until it is not.
This is why it is so important to honor the woman in your life's superpower and work with it so you can better navigate decisions, opportunities, and conflict on your journey together.

The point of every argument/fight should be understanding—not victory.
Why would you want to defeat your teammate? Right?
Using something like a ball...or an object that deescalates the tension...is an effective way to keep the conversation going.
Remember, you don’t get the ball until the other person is convinced you understand what he/she is trying to say.
And, each person gets a chance to be understood before this exercise is over. It’s not fair for one party to “have a ball” without the other party to get a chance to “have a ball,” too.
#fighting #relationshipconflict #marriagecoaching #conflict #fightingfair #conflictmanagement #marriagefighting #marriageadvice #marriage
If they don’t, I really have to wonder if their relationship is important and valuable to them.
Why? Well, valuable things are worth fighting for...right?
So, if fighting is a part of every healthy and normal relationship, how can we fight well?
Let me use an analogy: Tennis
A tennis match is only good when the ball is hit back and forth.
Without a volley back and forth, it’s not a really a good game; it’s only a series of serves.
Think about it...what tennis highlights get featured on ESPN? It’s the long and dramatic vollies where both players keep making incredible hits and saves until finally—after a long time—someone finally misses the ball, or it’s outside of the lines. Even so, unless the match is over, they grab another ball and start again.
So, what can we learn from tennis that can enable us to have healthier conflict in our relationships?
First: Keep the Ball Moving
Just engage and “hit” the ball your partner vollies to your side of the court. Your volley doesn’t have to be perfect. Just try. Make contact. Be intent on doing everything you can to keep the “ball” (conversation) going.
Second: Stay on the Court
Walking away—every time—or deflecting or laughing it off or anything else one does to consistently avoid conflict is unkind, unhelpful, and unproductive. It’s impossible to have a volley if the other person is no longer on the other side of the court.
Third: Hit the Ball as Gently as Possible
If one is intent on a consistent and productive volley—and not total victory—then one must refrain from hitting the ball at the other person as hard as possible! Doing so may “break” your opponent and win the point, but result in one losing the game.

That being said, men...if you want to communicate better with the woman in you life, here are a few practical things you can do to keep from becoming road-kill!🙂
Stop: Put your phone down. Turn off technology and tune in to your wife. Be present in her presence. Actively sit, stand, and be still as she is talking with you so that she knows she—and what’s she saying—is more important than everything else in the world at that moment.
Look: Look at her. It’s rude to not look at someone when they are talking to you, so don’t be rude. Show her you respect and value her by giving her your full attention and keeping your face...and heart...towards her.
Listen: Listening to someone is a gift. Actively listen to your spouse. Be obsessed with understanding what she is trying to communicate with you. Seek to understand her before you are understood.
Do these three things and you will have better communication with your wife and avoid becoming relational “road-kill”!

No one is perfect, so there are always enough wrongs to fill every page, every day.
If you have a record of all the wrongs someone else has done to you, you are in a position of power. Your record of wrongs is either a “sword” you can use to slay your foe or it’s a “shield” you can use to deflect any attempts by your foe to defend himself.
If you choose to keep a record of wrongs against someone, you will kill that relationship.
This is not about NOT dealing with your problems! No!
Deal with your problems.
Learn to fight well.
Seek to understand before you are understood.
I’m just asking you to not head into your problems with your big record of wrongs in your arms or in your soul.
I would encourage you...if you are holding a record of wrongs against your spouse...shred it and THEN start working on your problems—not EVERY problem ALL at once—but one at a time.

I’m using my power to make this post and you’re using your power to read it.
It is so important for us to use our power well and one of the best ways to use our power well is to not let others misuse it.
If someone is tapping into your power (like plugging an extension cord into the side of your metaphorical “house”) to power and run a Crazy Circus next door...
Where people who you thought were safe are getting amusement at your expense.
Where they are mocking you in their “fun house.”
Where they are empowering huge neon signs—pointed your direction—which read, “She’s crazy!” “She’s a (insert hurtful phrase)”, “He’s a loser!”, etc.
Pull the plug, lock the outlets, and shut the Craziness down!
You can do this!
You are powerful!
You have no moral responsibility to be around anyone who is not safe!
We are all counting on you to use your power well!
It’s time for the Crazy Circus to leave town!🙂

Boundaries Must Be Communicated
Like we say to our little kids...if you need to set better boundaries between you and another person, “Use your words.” Tell them, “This is okay.” And, “this is not okay.”
Boundaries Must Be Clear
Invisible fences are good for dogs but bad for people. If its looks like there isn’t a boundary between me and you, I will be more likely to approach you. If you need a boundary between me and you...help me to see it.
Boundaries Must Be Consistent
Good fences don’t move. Don’t move your fence because you think it’s what you need to do to be more likeable. I think consistency provides for more security and being more secure in a relationship creates a space where love can be experienced more consistently.
Boundaries Must Be Compassionate
You may be reluctant to set a good boundary because you believe that fences are intrinsically negative and hurtful. They aren’t...and they definitely don’t have to be! You may be wounded, but that doesn’t necessarily mean you have to put up an electrified barbed-wire fence.
That being said, you may have someone in your life who is not safe.
I just think I need to say—in regards to our interpersonal relationships—being a Christian doesn’t mean you have to recklessly expose yourself to people who are consistently not safe...or condemn yourself to a life of constantly having to scrape their dog’s poop off of your shoes.
Some Boundaries Must Be UnCrossable.
If your neighbor is a psycho...you need a fence that IS uncrossable, right?

As you are setting your weekly, monthly, and 6-month plans, here are 4 questions I encourage you to ask yourself as you are creating a schedule that will position you to reach your goals:
Who am I?
Our identity should clarify what we do each day. It should determine the goals we set for ourselves, our marriages, our families, and our careers.
Why am I here?
Once we know who we are, we should have more clarity as to what we should be doing with our time and the goals we are best equipped to reach.
What is important to me?
Our priorities will be reflected in our calendars. If you are not accomplishing things that are important to you; that’s your fault! Here’s an example: My wife is important to me, so—on my weekly calendar—you will see a recurring and unmovable entry every Wednesday night, “Date Night!”
How can I best accomplish what is important to me?
Our weekly, monthly, and 6-month plans should include practical steps that create the margin, moments, and momentum to help what’s important to us to actually happen.
#goals #planning #calendar #success #lifecoaching #failingtoplanisplanningtofail #relationshipadvice #marriageadvice #marriage
First, make it a Priority.
If you want to get better at communication, it must be something that you really want to do. :)
It’s my experience that we do what we really want to do. If we really want to get better at communicating with our spouses, or significant others, we will make time, and we will treat them as people who are significant to us. It doesn’t seem we have a hard time communicating with our most valued clients, do we?
If the person with whom we want to communicate is truly important to us, we will make it a priority to communicate – or learn to communicate – with them.
Second, we must practice Presence.
There are so many things in our world that can distract us from another human being. If we want to learn to communicate better with another human being, it’s crucial that we are present in their presence.
Look at them.
Listen to them.
Immerse yourself in the moment with them.
When we work to remove any and all distractions from the person with whom we want to communicate, we create a sacred space, where conversation can grow organically.
Third, we must Practice.
To get better at anything, we must work at it. Once you’ve made it a priority to communicate with your spouse, or significant other, and once you are truly present in their presence, practice chatting with them.
If someone is truly interesting to us, we will take a true interest in them.
Ask your spouse, or significant other, how their day was, how that meeting went, how they feel about the family drama they endured during the holidays. :-)
Another tool you can look at is a conversation starting game called, Chat Pack. Or, use the 4 D’s as an outline for a meaningful conversation. Ask them to share a delight, something that is draining them, something they have discovered (learned) recently, and something they’re determined to do.

This creates several important things for your children.
It creates: Identity.
“We love each other and we love you because you are our child and we are your parents.” The love my parents had for each other defined who I was. I was the son of 2 human beings who loved each other.
It creates: Security.
Knowing that my parents loved each other made me more secure. Our kids are drawn to our love. Don’t believe me? If you have young kids you can test this out by hugging each other in the middle of the kitchen floor. I predict that, if you do that, you will have little kids hugging your legs before no time! Kids are just drawn to the love their parents have for each other.
It creates: Vitality.
When we love each other well, we create a world that is safe, nurturing, and life-giving. The love between a father and mother is like a fence surrounding and protecting our kids. When our kids don’t have to worry about being vulnerable to “bad things,” they can relax, play, grow, and live!
So…
Be easy to love. Focus on making it easy for your spouse to love you. Work hard. Live with integrity. Be humble.
Be kind.
Be generous.
Be thoughtful.
Be considerate.
Let’s do these things and maybe, one day in the future, we’ll overhear our kids talking about how magical their childhood was, too.

Not false, but also not entirely helpful in real life marriage application….imho. 🙂
Marriage is a partnership.
Marriage takes teamwork.
Each person must commit to making the relationship work.
That all being said, I’ve found—as a marriage coach—that extraordinary marriages require more of a 100/100 dynamic!
When each partner brings EVERYTHING they have…100% of themselves…the excess commitment is what gets us through the hard times!

Be healthy.

Be helpful.
Be moral.
Be conscientious.
Be present.

Here are 3 simple questions you can ask your spouse, partner, or teammate tonight that can bring significant results tomorrow.
#teammates #powerofquestions #marriageadvice #coaching #team #marriagegoals #teamgoals #shorts
Do what you say you’re going to do.
Show up when you say you’re going to show up.
She doesn’t need you to be perfect.
You don’t, do you, ladies? If so, you’re just setting yourself up for disappointment and him up for failure. Plus, perfection is an illusion.
She wants you to consistently show up, be kind, help around the house, help with the kids, be present with her, be interested in her, and generally just to consistently be personally, emotionally, and spiritually invested and involved in the relationship.

Here are 3 signs you may be in a relationship with a narcissist.
Cast
You feel like they have cast themselves as the “star of the show” and you are just cast in a minor supporting role. For a narcissist it’s ALL about ensuring they get all of the attention and that they are constantly seen as amazing, wonderful, flawless, and extraordinary. You don’t matter. If you do anything they perceive as a “threat” to their image, you will begin to experience their wrath.
Crazy
Narcissists will torment you, abuse you, and push you until you can’t take anymore and then—when you react and call them on their mistreatment—they will act like you’re crazy. You’re imagining it. This is called gaslighting—and it’s a narcissist’s favorite weapon. If you refuse to accept their abuse, they will start a campaign to convince your friends and family that you are crazy…and just making things up.
Chaos
Narcissists will create emotional, physical, psychological, and financial chaos to get you unstable. Instability is a tool a narcissist will use to control you. It’s as if you are standing on a platform that they intentionally start rocking so—when you reach out to keep from falling—you’ll have no choice but to reach for them.
I believe awareness is power.
If this Reel has made you aware that you are married to a narcissist, let me encourage you to embrace that truth. I wish I could give you a lot of hope they will change, but I can’t. It’s been my experience that narcissists rarely change, unless they realize they are a narcissist and seek professional help. Your options are limited to the following steps:
Point out to them, carefully, that you believe they have narcissistic personality disorder.
Pray for God to make them aware of their condition.
Pray for God to change them.
Pursue professional counseling, therapy or psychiatric care for them.
And, if none of that works…
Protect yourself with clear, unmovable, and impenetrable boundaries.
If you are now aware you’re dating a narcissist, you will save yourself unbelievable heartache and suffering by ending the relationship now.

3rd Parties in a marriage include, but are not limited to…
-Another man or woman with whom you’ve forged an emotional or physical relationship.
-A spouse’s parent where there is an unhealthy emotional attachment (spouse to parent or vice versa) or unhealthy physical attachment (they are living with you against the wishes of one of the spouses).
-Or, any other person who takes an inordinate amount of attention away from the marriage relationship.

I also think, expecting your spouse to be perfect, or your marriage to be perfect, sets one of you up for failure and the other person up for disappointment.
It’s been my experience, that even the most healthy relationship is about 15% jacked up. :-)
15% of the time they don’t like each other, they are fighting about everything, they are on each other’s last nerve, and they are pretty sure they married the wrong person.
Now, I’m not saying we should accept mediocrity in our relationships, but I am saying we should show ourselves and our spouses a little more grace.
Do the little things right.
Strive to have an extraordinary relationship by doing the next best thing.
Work at falling in love after your wedding day.
Learn to disagree agreeably.
Just realize, the couple you idolize and think have a perfect marriage, are also severely jacked up about 15% of the time. :-)

I believe going to bed at the same time is a healthy rhythm because it creates opportunities for conversation, quality time, time to process the events of the day, and time to connect intimately.
Is this something that has to happen every night? Of course not! That’s not realistic at all. Especially if your work schedule does not allow for it.
That all being said, when your habit is to go to bed at the same time it can create a synergy that is life-giving to your relationship.
My wife and I have talked about this habit, and we both agree that it is one of the most important things we do for our marriage. Going to bed at the same time aligns our rhythms, our sleep patterns, it provides time to chat at the end of every day, we feel more connected, and it provides opportunity to have sex and connect intimately more often.
#marriageprotip #marriageadvice #sleephabits #sex #relationshipadvice #marriagetips #relationshipadvice #shorts
That you like each other.
-In any healthy relationship this will come and go, so we need to work at being likable and removing barriers to liking the other person.
That you love each other.
—Unless things are really toxic and dysfunctional, this should be a standard—simply because the other person is a human being made in the image of God and worthy of a basic level of love.
But, this next one is the key to having an extraordinary relationship…and my biggest wish for you…
That you are in love with each other.
-Now, this can come and go too, but it is essential, so—if we fall out of love with someone with whom we are in a relationship and we want it to continue—we must learn to/and work at falling in love with each other again.
To fall in love with someone again, or to stay in love, takes work. So, make connection, intimacy, communication, trust, kindness…and liking them (and being likable) and loving them (and being lovable) a priority and you’ll be more likely to find yourselves in love with each other!
