Despite claims of widespread approval for Nazi rule in Austria, many intellectuals and professors who opposed Hitler were publicly humiliated and forced to scrub the streets. The Nazis targeted Jewish citizens, including Sigmund Freud, who narrowly escaped thanks to international intervention. The early horrors of World War II had already begun.
