Prabhupada Established Farm Sanctuary in the United States of America.
These images are of Real Gita-nagari which was started in 1975 as per Prabhupada's Geeta Nagari vision. This farm was established by Prabhupada and his students as a reaction to the failure of New Vrindavana, (started in 1967), to follow Prabhupada's instructions on agriculturally based, self-sufficient farm sanctuary communities. In this vision the animals are not only protected but also productive. In the early eighties the cows pictured here had the highest butterfat average in Pennsylvania. It takes a high level of expertise by the cowherd men and women to bring about such accomplishments. Thanks to all.
"In other farms the cows do not deliver as much milk as in our farms; because our cows know very well that we are not going to kill them, they are happy, and they give ample milk. Therefore this instruction given by Lord Kṛṣṇa—go-rakṣya—is extremely meaningful. The whole world must learn from Kṛṣṇa how to live happily without scarcity simply by producing food grains (annād bhavanti bhūtāni) and giving protection to the cows (go-rakṣya)."

"Every now and then I come across a farm family with a unique approach to making the maximum net profit from grass and grazing. Ralph and Sita Laurino of Port Royal, PA are such an example. They are the farm managers of Iskcon Farm.
Iskcon is a Hare Krishna farm. The Hare Krishna believe that cows are sacred and should not be killed for human consumption. The farm has 200 Brown Swiss cows and oxen that are used today solely as work animals.
However, in 1984 the farm had the highest butterfat average in Pennsylvania when it was being managed as a communal dairy.
In the drought year of 1988, Ralph told me that is was only through intensive grazing management that he and his wife were able to keep the farm going."
