The Diablo Canyon Nuclear Power Plant has been criticized for nearly half a century, with protests happening before it was even built. In 1981, 1,900 activists were arrested during a two-week blockade of the plant, making it one of the largest arrests in the history of U.S. nuclear protest. While these decades of protests failed to stop the plant from opening in 1985, many groups continue their work fighting nuclear power and they hope that their criticism will lessen the chance of disaster.
