Welcome back to the channel. We’re traveling around the Netherlands and sharing with you the very best of this beautiful country. In this episode we share exclusive aerial footage of four of the most prominent historic landmarks of Voorne-Putten. Enjoy the ride!
#1 - Fort Penserdijk was built in 1885 as part of the "Monden Maas en Haringvliet" fortification. It consists of an elongated wall with steep slopes, and is surrounded by a wide moat.
#2 - Ravesteyn Castle was built in the mid-13th century by Hugo, Lord of Heenvliet. Ravensteyn Castle was one of 5 fortified structures built in the area and would be the only one to survive. The two story castle was occupied for several centuries. A residential wing was added to the castle in the 14th-century, and that same century the fortification burned to its foundations before being rebuilt.
The castle continued to serve as a prison and military fortification during the 16th-century. The castle was intentionally destroyed in 1572 by Dutch Sea Beggars during the Dutch revolt against Spain in order to keep the castle from being used by the Spanish army. The castle ruins and moat remain near Heenvliet and are part of protected garden.
#3 - Stenen Baak is a now-deactivated lighthouse northeast of Oostvoorne, near to the town of Brielle. In several nautical sources of the 19th Century it is also referred to as Stone Beacon or Stone Baak. It protected the entrance to the Brielle harbour, a safe haven protecting ships from the tides and waters of the North Sea.
#4 - Burcht van Oostvoorne: the ruins of this castle stand in the middle of a hill within an irregular ring wall with buttresses of a rampart from the late 13th century. It was one of the residences of Jacoba van Beieren. The castle was the seat of the lords of Voorne, the first of which was already mentioned in 1108. This castle, surrounded by a moat around a raised sand hill, is difficult to spot at ground level. Only the remains of the foundation and walls were uncovered in 1934 and subsequently restored and preserved.
