Today Joseph Mallord William Turner is considered to be one of the greatest British artists and romantic painters.
He is known for his expressive use of colour, imaginative landscapes, and turbulent marine paintings.
He left behind hundreds of oil paintings and watercolours, as well as 30k works on paper ā amongst his notes we discovered a list of food and drink he consumed in 1839.

In the 1800s, most bread was still baked with homegrown (or brewery-grown) yeast. It was time-consuming to nurture, and performed unpredictably.
At one point, nineteenth-century English bread was thought to contain bone fragments! (A chemist eventually proved that this was not true).
A key element of bread of Victorian bread was alum, which is a bleaching ingredient that also makes bread look bigger.
Victorians enjoyed lots of blue cheese (similar to Roquefort), as well as more hard cheeses like Cheshire cheese.
