The second Whig to hold the office of the presidency, John Tyler was was the first vice-president to ascend to the presidency after the death of the sitting president....earning him the unflattering knick-name, "His Accidency." John Tyler, abandoned by both of the major political parties, made waves by overseeing the annexation of Texas in 1845.
