At the HiPEAC 2026 conference in Krakow, Poland, we heard from Pawel Skruch, the professor for robotics, control, and AI at AGH University of Krakow, on the evolution of automotive system architectures in the era of software-defined vehicles (SDVs).
He said that while modern robotic and automotive systems are increasingly software-defined, the execution platform remains foundational. Commenting on this, he states that everyone is fascinating about the software-defined aspects, but it need to run on something - the foundational hardware.
He also highlights why the shift toward server-oriented computing platforms in vehicles is inevitable, but how it introduces significant challenges related to energy efficiency, thermal dissipation, safety, security, and long-term reliability.
EE Times caught up with him after his talk to learn more about this, about the trends towards SDVs, the serverization of the vehicle, and challenges in bringing models like Nvidia's Alpamayo models to production scale.
