Located at the Grand Bay Coastal Resource Center, that is in the Grand Bay National Wildlife Refuge, is the mile and a half Wet Pine Savanna Trail. The Grand Bay NWR is located on the MS Gulf Coast at the MS/AL state line just a few miles south of Highway 90. The area used to be dotted with homes up and down the roads. In 2005, the 20+ feet storm surge of Hurricane Katrina swept through the area and flooded out most, if not all, of the homes. From my understanding, the homes and properties were bought out by one government agency or another. Afterward, the land was added to the NWR area, and a larger resource center was built.
I'm not exactly sure when this trail opened. The oldest AllTrails review shows 2020. But I'm willing to bet it's been around for a good bit longer.
The main trail is a giant loop through an open savanna that's dotted with pine trees in a somewhat damp area. After said loop is a 1000ft boardwalk that ends in an old oxbow lake of the Escatawpa River that once flowed through the area thousands of years ago.
