East Iceland Trekking: Mountains, Fjords and the North Atlantic
Iceland's East is remote wilderness at its most untouched. This trek takes you through a landscape of mountains and small bays shaped by time — coastal peaks in every form and colour, from black sand beaches to ridgelines washed in pink and orange.
The ocean is never far away. Each day we follow old trails between isolated coves and fjords, over hillsides and down green valleys, ending at the shore with the North Atlantic close at hand. It's this pairing of mountain and sea that defines the route, and the low altitude brings a milder climate than you might expect this far into the highlands.
People lived and farmed here until the early 1970s. Abandoned farmsteads still mark the land — these days it's sheep, not people, keeping that history company.
Nights are spent in well-equipped, comfortable huts along the way.
