Having spent three days hiking and two nights wild camping, we decided to hike another three days but this time, stay in refuges for a couple of nights, namely Refuge Estos and Refuge Angel Oros, in the heart of Spanish Pyrenees, near to Aneto the highest mountain in the region, as well as the third Highest in Spain.. We drove to Refuge Viados and left the car there, as the hike we would be doing would be a loop back to this starting point.
Although the signs say only nine or ten Kilometres between refuges, this was an extremely challenging hike, especially from Refuge Estos to Angel Oros, where after a few km's, is not really much of a path but big rocks and slippy gravel. However, the scenery is mindblowing and is worth every step of the ten hours to reach the refuge, where our cooked dinner and bottle of wine was very welcome.
Hiking in this landscape, although challenging and tiring, was a lifelong ambition and the abundance of wildlife, Birds of prey, Squirrells, Deer and the many Marmots made it all the more memorable, as well as hiking with my great friend Isabel, who i could not have done it without. It was an extremely emotional hike, especially when sat above the mountains, looking back over towards Aneto and Maladeta mountain range, where I shed some tears, in memory of my recently departed Mother and Brother.
I hope to go back again in the future as there is so much to explore in the region, as this was part of the GR11 route, i would like to eventually complete the whole of the GR10 & 11.
