Pups and Puppets - The old man now knew enemies were everywhere he turned. At the same time, when he passed through villages, he was astonished to find that men, women, children - even dogs - gathered around him to hear a story as well.

It reminded him of a story his father told him when he was a young pup, a rumor, really, going back to Ancient Greece.

The story went like this: A man wanted to write a play and wandered one day to the amphitheater. On his way he saw what looked like a homeless man speaking to a large crowd of people in the street. The transient-looking man had no regard for his own appearance, with his long beard and dirt-covered clothing, yet there was a sense of energy in the air around him when he spoke to the crowd. People listened intently, leaning in, waving others over to hear him. This strange man was unafraid to question everyone who came to hear him, and he was also unafraid to question himself in front of them.

When the would-be playwright stopped to listen, he realized that the man was not homeless at all - that his home was the home of the mind. And so, from that day forward, he decided he would not write plays, but instead record everything spoken by this questioning man. That questioning man was none other than Socrates – and if Plato had not decided to stop to listen that day, we would not know their names.

The old Highlander laughed to himself at the idea of people looking up to him for any advice. He was hardly a Socrates in life, hardly a Theogenes in fighting. In fact, Mrs. Highlander would often tease him, saying, “You are as slow as Molasses in Winter!” This always made him laugh when he remembered it.

But the people in the village on this day were not laughing. They all had the look of fear on their faces. And the old Highlander listened to their pleas for help. They were invaded by all sorts of factions, they told him. They heard rumors that a new faction of Chinese were also on the way as well. They didn’t understand why everyone had been fighting for so long, they said. It seemed to depend on the weather of politics, and something about “Honor” they said to the old man.

The old man decided to stay for a little while and train those in the village to defend themselves. In return for his guidance, the village brought him food, which was hot and tasted good, and offered him a home there, but the old Highlander refused, needing to make his way farther into the forest, where he could swear he heard his dear wife calling to him.

A young Bard in the village told everyone from that day forth of the elder Highlander, the old man, who passed through his hometown. Before the old man left, the young Bard asked him, “Who’s responsible for all this bloodshed and madness everywhere?”

The old man replied, “Do you remember when you were young and played with small puppets that were meant to be two warriors fighting?”

“I do,” said the young Bard. “I pretended one was good and the other evil. Good always prevailed.”

“Well,” the old man said, “something is in the way above us - something that comes from far away, as if from another time. People play us like we are merely puppets. And I do not like it one bit.”
