Most of our landscaping is installed to beautify our property. However, sometimes we find things in our landscape we don’t want there. Manhole covers, electrical boxes, phone boxes and even our air conditioning units can cause an unsightly presence in our landscape. Here are a few tips for hiding the uglies.
Plant Ornamental Grasses
There are several advantages to hiding the uglies with ornamental grasses. First, ornamental grasses grow to the same height every year. Smaller varieties will grow 2-3 feet, while larger varieties can reach heights of 10-12 feet.
Second, ornamental grasses are very low maintenance. They simply need to be cut down to ground level every fall.
Finally, ornamental grasses are very hearty. Often times workmen will need to service electrical and other utility boxes. Grasses can be trampled and will come back, time and time again.
Materials Needed:
- ornamental grass
- mulch
Tools Needed:
- spade or shovel
Hardscape with lattice
For larger “uglies” such as Air conditioning units, lattice is always a good choice. Here are a few tips for installing lattice around an air conditioner.
1) Do not set your posts in concrete. If your posts are set in concrete, removing the lattice structure to service or replace the air conditioner will be very difficult. Instead, set you posts in firm ground. Using a hammer, pound the soil around the base of the post. This will help to firm up the soil. (Remember to keep your posts level.)
2) Keep your lattice off the ground. Always install your lattice with at least a 6-inch gap from the ground. This will allow you to mow or string trim around the lattice structure.
3) Plant vines. Planting vines on your lattice is a great way to decorate you landscape. However, if you plant vines on the lattice around your air conditioner, IT IS VERY IMPORTANT that your leave an open 2-foot area between the AC unit and the lattice. If an adequate space is not left, the AC unit may not perform properly.
