Ja’Dayia Kursh is the first Black rodeo queen in the state of Arkansas, a feat the now 20-year-old accomplished when she was crowned Miss Rodeo Coal Hill of Arkansas on her 17th birthday in 2017.

Ja’dayia Kursh is born and raised in Arkansas, and the oldest of six. She got involved with horses at six years old, after a trip to a ranch where she was told, “This is a 1500-pound animal. If you can control this horse, you can control anything that comes your way.” Kursh fell in love with horses, and became involved with rodeo at 13 after saving up enough of her own money to rent her first horse.

She did Pony Express riding with youth amateur group the Arkansas Seven, making appearances at parades and festivals. She later auditioned for the Old Fort Days Dandies, becoming the second ever Black Dandy on the premier equestrian drill team. Kursh and her horse, Queen, were immediate fan favorites in the arenas full of thousands, but unfortunately she faced ridicule amongst her peers on the team because of her race. After news of the racism got out, the prestigious troupe - which had been started in 1977 - disbanded in 2018.

On the night she was crowned Miss Rodeo Coal Hill Arkansas, making her the first black rodeo queen in Arkansas, she was hit with excessive racist backlash on social media to the point where she considered relinquishing the title to the runner-up. Ultimately, she decided to use the challenges as motivation to make her stronger. She has said that her next goal is to be crowned Miss Rodeo America.

She currently attends the university of Arkansas and is also a model for Wrangler Jeans. Pre covid, She was also headed to Texas to train as a saddle bronc rider.
