Doreen Ketchens (born October 3, 1966 in New Orleans, Louisiana) is a jazz clarinetist who performs Dixieland and traditional jazz. She is one of the first and few female bandleaders in New Orleans, and a musical educator. She has performed at concert halls, music festivals, schools, embassies, clubs, and for decades, outside in the French Quarter of New Orleans with her band, Doreen's Jazz New Orleans. Ketchens has performed for four U.S. Presidents and is widely considered one of the cultural ambassadors of New Orleans and of traditional New Orleans music.
With nicknames like ‘Queen Clarinet,’ ‘The Female Louis Armstrong,’ and "Lady Louis" because of her ability to hit and hold powerful high notes and her love of Armstrong's performance style, she has performed with many jazz greats and has been featured in numerous documentaries about New Orleans, its music, and its heritage. Initially disliking jazz, she focused on classical music instead, studying with the New York Philharmonic and University of Hartford's The Hartt School in Hartford, CT. She also had an internship with the symphony in Hartford and attended Delgado Community College and Loyola University of New Orleans.
Ketchens is married to fellow jazz musician Lawrence Ketchens, whom she met at Loyola. She worked her way through music conservatories and college as a chef, holding positions from prep cook to head chef, and ran a plate lunch eatery called "Doreen's Sweet Shop" for a time- until she and Lawrence kept passing musicians working the streets of New Orleans, and she told him that they could probably make more money doing that.
The couple began performing on the streets of New Orleans in 1987. As they came into contact with various other street musicians, Ketchens put a band together, and they began playing in Jackson Square with her first band, the Jackson Square All-Stars. The band evolved into "Doreen's Jazz New Orleans," but was met with sexism and chauvinism when they attempted to play in clubs, as many traditional jazz club owners did not want a band with a female bandleader. Instead, the band remained outdoors in the French Quarter, and became popular for their street shows and performances at festivals. Ketchens also understood the importance of the early internet, and provided music, videos, and merchandise for direct sale to fans through her website, which contributed to their success. The band has self-released 23 volumes of CDs and 3 DVDs.
Post-Katrina, Doreen’s Jazz New Orleans hit the road after the street work ‘evaporated.’ “The world would come to us; now we have to go to the world,” she has said. As entertainers and educators on traditional Nola jazz, Ketchens' group has appeared at Jazz Festivals in New Orleans and at music festivals, fairs, workshops, and showcases throughout the world, with job offers coming from Europe, Asia and South America. Ketchens has said that Doreen's Jazz New Orleans is a group whose primary interest lies in spreading the culture and traditional music of New Orleans all over the world.
