Meet Hometown Hero Daniel Rippeon.
Daniel served six and half years as an Infantryman in the U.S. Army, achieving the rank of Staff Sergeant. Stationed at Fort Hood, Texas, Fort Benning, Georgia, and a rotation to South Korea. He also was deployed to RC east Afghanistan in Operation Enduring Freedom
2013-2014.
Daniel grew up in Port Orange, Florida and after finishing his service to the U.S. Army decided to continue to serve his community, currently working as a Police officer with the DeLand Police Department.

May 10, 2025, at approximately 22:05 * Location: 1806 S. Ridgewood Avenue, Edgewater, FL * Case Number: EW250500060 * Officer Involved: Officer Daniel Rippeon (Badge EP661) * Person Recorded: Paul Wert I am writing to request body cam footage in regards to an incident involving my younger brother Paul A. Wert IV (DOB: 05/07/2003), who was arrested on May 10, 2025, at 1806 S. Ridgewood Avenue, Edgewater, FL (Case #EW250500060, Officer Daniel Rippeon, Badge EP661). Paul is currently detained at Volusia County Branch Jail (VCBJ) in a holding cell and is experiencing a severe mental health crisis. Paul finished his shift at CVS, where he is employed, at 10:00pm on May 10 and was waiting outside for a Lyft ride I arranged. I spoke with him at 10:04pm, and he seemed fine. At 10:07pm, the Lyft driver informed me Paul was being arrested and said an officer dismissed him despite identifying himself as Paul’s driver. I canceled the ride as instructed. Paul has diagnosed PTSD and schizophrenia and was Baker Acted in Edgewater one week prior (around May 2, 2025) due to a mental health episode I initiated. The arresting officer called me and noted Paul said he worked at CVS but did not believe him because he wore a hoodie, not a uniform. The officer also said other officers had prior encounters with Paul but did not consider his mental conditions, which cause him to be skeptical of police and act “off.” Paul’s bail has been paid, but he remains detained int the holding cell because he refuses fingerprinting, a requirement for release. He is having a full mental health episode in the holding cell, refusing to eat, speak, or cooperate with jail staff. He is not in a mental state to communicate with an attorney or make decisions and has been in this holding cell since the night of his arrest. I am concerned the arrest may be invalid, as Paul was lawfully present as a CVS employee waiting for a Lyft. The officer’s failure to verify his employment or consider his mental health may undermine the detention’s legality. I can provide proof of Paul’s CVS employment, Lyft records, and medical documentation.
