Nicolae Ceaușescu, Romania's post-war communist dictator, ruled for 24 years after being sworn in as general secretary in March 1965. Initially regarded as the most liberal of the Soviet Bloc leaders, his stance shifted in the 1970s as he gradually became more authoritarian.
When he feared the secret police force, known as the Securitate, became his go-to department if there was any sign of internal dissent, his transition to dictator was complete. By the end of the 1970s, Romania was one of the world's most oppressive states.
After the army turned on him, Ceaușescu had no choice but to flee, escaping by helicopter from the roof of the Romanian parliament. The army threatened to shoot down the helicopter, forcing Ceaușescu to land and surrender. A popular uprising in 1989 led to the downfall of the Romanian leader, who was later executed.
