In 1982 at the United Nations, it was agreed that the international seabed and its mineral resources should be reserved as the common heritage of all humankind. The convention the UN established states that any resources extracted from the seabed should benefit humankind as a whole.
But deep-sea mining would extract profits from our shared heritage and divert them into the pockets of a handful of rich companies, leaving poorer nations saddled with the costs of damage to the seabed.
New and mounting scientific evidence that deep-sea mining would have a devastating effect on deep-sea ecosystems must act as a starting gun for governments to hit the pause button and stop the rush to mine the deep.
