In this People Get Ready guitar lesson, I’ll show you how I approach the Curtis Mayfield classic on guitar, using a variety of chord voicings, fills, and melodic ideas to bring the progression to life.
Rather than simply learning one chord shape for each chord in the song, we’ll explore multiple voicings across the fretboard. These are incredibly useful shapes that you can take beyond People Get Ready and incorporate into other soul, R&B, gospel and neo-soul chord progressions.
My approach is inspired by the beautiful guitar style of Curtis Mayfield, while adding some more contemporary neo-soul guitar ideas to the arrangement. We’ll look at ways to move between chord voicings, add melodic embellishments, and fill the spaces around the vocal melody without overcrowding the song.
If you're looking to expand your guitar chord vocabulary, improve your rhythm guitar playing, or learn how to create more interesting parts over relatively simple chord progressions, there are plenty of ideas here that you can apply to your own playing.
