The visual effects work done by Metaphysic.ai for the film “Here” marks a groundbreaking leap in AI-driven performance enhancement and digital character recreation. When VFX Supervisor Kevin Baillie approached the company, the challenge was extraordinary — to digitally recreate multiple actors across different stages of their lives while preserving the emotional depth and authenticity of their performances.
Inspired by Richard McGuire's graphic novel, the film’s narrative demanded the boundaries of generative AI technology be pushed further than ever before. Photoreal younger versions of Tom Hanks, Robin Wright, Paul Bettany, and John C. Reilly had to be created and rendered in real-time, directly on set.
Metaphysic's approach was both highly technical and artistically ambitious. They began by training neural network models on archival footage and reference photos of the actors in their younger years. The goal wasn’t just visual accuracy, but also to capture the emotional nuance and soul of each performance. For Tom Hanks alone, models were developed to portray five distinct ages — with similar detail for other key cast members.
One of the standout innovations was the “Youth Mirror” system — a setup that allowed actors to see themselves as their younger selves in real-time, with only a two-frame delay. This helped the performers fine-tune their acting based on how their digital de-aged versions appeared live on screen.
The real-time 4K cinematic rendering process was extremely challenging. Metaphysic worked closely with director Robert Zemeckis, providing both raw and AI-enhanced live camera feeds, allowing him to direct scenes with complete visual clarity and creative flexibility.
Traditional CGI alone couldn’t have achieved this level of realism. Metaphysic’s proprietary AI tools enabled seamless performance transfer across ages, preserving the physical traits and emotional beats of each actor’s original performance.
This wasn’t just a technical effort—it was a deeply creative one. Artists at Metaphysic continually refined models, adjusted eyelines, and fine-tuned emotional expressions. They built custom neural tools and visual data pipelines to ensure absolute fidelity to each scene.
According to VFX Supervisor Jo Plaete, working with forward-thinking filmmakers like Zemeckis and Baillie pushed the team to redefine what's possible in cinematic storytelling.
“Here” is more than a film — it’s a demonstration of how ethical, human-focused AI can elevate storytelling. Metaphysic remained fully committed to preserving human rights and creative control, using AI to enhance artistic expression, not replace it.
