Our guest this week is the remarkable Sterlin Harjo. Sterlin (Seminole/Muscogee) is an award winning filmmaker from Holdenville, Oklahoma. Now based in Tulsa, Harjo is the co-creator and showrunner of the FX Productions series “Reservation Dogs”. A comedy series following four Indigenous teenage friends living on a reservation in Oklahoma. The show is groundbreaking on many levels, notably as the first and only TV series to feature all Native writers and directors, an entirely Native main cast, and an almost entirely Native production team. The series just finished its third (and final) season. Harjo co-created Reservation Dogs with his long time friend Taika Waititi. Over his career, Sterlin has created and directed five feature films: three narrative dramas and two documentaries. His most recent feature, “Love and Fury," is a documentary chronicling the work and intersection of over a dozen contemporary Native American artists. Harjo’s first feature film, “Four Sheets to the Wind,” premiered at Sundance Film Festival in 2007 and was nominated for the Grand Jury Prize. Each of his films are set in Oklahoma and address contemporary Indigenous experiences.
