Sharks came into existence about 400 million years ago. They came about 200 million years before dinosaurs. They are apex predators which means top predators and present at the top of the food chain. They live in tropical coral reefs, to the deep sea. They live in the marine ecosystem and feed themselves on fish, invertebrates, sea lions, seals and other marine mammals. They have more than 400 species.
Sharks are actually important for Ocean’s health
Sharks are known to be apex predators which means they prevent one species from monopolizing one region and hence maintain diversity in the ecosystem. Also, sharks have six highly refined senses namely: hearing, smell, touch, taste, sight, and electromagnetism along with a sleek body that makes most of the sharks quite skilled hunters. Studies have proved that areas of the ocean with apex predators have a vast range of biodiversity as compared to the areas where there are no apex predators.
Humans are not their Diet
We are not their diet choice! Sharks usually like smaller fish and invertebrates and the larger sharks like to eat large fat content such as tuna or seal. They prefer rich fat food such as seals and sea lions and humans are too bony to eat. Researches proved that sharks don’t attack humans to eat. These attacks would be the result of curiosity or any misunderstanding because sharks usually attack from behind. But after all, this is the reality that the victim of shark has fewer chances to survive because the wounds of shark biting are really severe. Sharks don’t attack animals that are larger than themselves. So, a human cannot be part of their diet.
Sharks should be afraid of Humans
The next reason is that humans hunt sharks more than sharks do. Humans being the top predators on Earth pose a greater threat to sharks than they do to us. They are largely being hunted by humans for a lot of reasons. That’s why the sharks should have more fear of humans. Because of this, sharks are also under threat of extinction. Humans hunt sharks for different purposes such as for meat, fins and internal organs. They use these to make different products including whitefish fillets, rock salmon, flake, pet food, garden fertilizer, anti-ageing cream, deodorant, skin lotion, jewellery with teeth, wallets, purses and shoes with leather and many more.
Most of the Sharks are harmless
Do Sharks cause harm? There is a myth that all sharks are bloodthirsty and dangerous but this is not reality. Although some of the sharks are big in size as whale sharks but there is no threat for humans because of them. Most of the sharks stay underneath and wait for their prey. Some sharks have been great swimming partners of humans and have zero threat to humans. These include nurse sharks, leopard sharks, angel sharks, zebra sharks, bamboo sharks and whale sharks.
