Hercules "The Action Game" is based on the Disney movie "Hercules", just as the movie is based on the legend...sounds like a recipe for disaster, but to be fair this is a good game - damn good ! It seems Virgin Entertainment managed to make some good Disney games, as they were also behind The Jungle Book and The Lion King, so this one turned out just as good. It follows the movie pretty well: the levels, the enemies and themes are all based on the movie and it even uses some voices clips taken right from it, most famously Danny DeVito as Philoctetes - the satyr who follows Herc in the training levels and nags you for making mistakes or wasting time. They even included cutscenes from the film and they look really good for the time, though I wish they would've included more of the 5 muses, particularly the "Zero to Hero" song, which was like the highlight of the whole movie. As Hercules, your job is simple: get to the end of each level while fighting enemies. Standing in your way are all sorts of enemies, traps and even bosses you'll have to fight, like the Centaur, the Cyclops and of course Hades himself at the end. The majority of the levels are standard side-scrolling levels, but there are also third-person auto-scrolling levels, where you can't stop or turn around and you have to constantly steer Herc around the obstacles and enemies that come towards you. You have a lot of attacks: Herc can punch, uppercut, and use a variety of swords which you collect along the way. Controlling Herc is OK, although I do feel like there's a slight delay when trying to steer yourself in mid air after jumping or leaping off a ledge. Other than that, no problems: it's really easy to move Herc around and beat the sh!t out of everything you come across. The animation on the characters is well done and the levels are very well detailed, my favorite in particular being the Thebes level. Each level has hidden letters which spell the word "HERCULES". They act as the continue feature, so if you find them all and somehow lose all your lives, you get to try again from the last level you reached, rather than having to start from level. They're usually hidden inside holes in the ground which you access by jumping in place and hitting "down" in mid air. After 3 stomps the ground caves in, revealing a hidden area with goodies. Speaking of which, other items include the "Herculade" drink which replenishes your health, the Hercules action figure which extends your life bar, 3 types of swords (lightning, fire and tornado), an invincibility helmet which makes you immune to damage from enemies and finally urns which represent pieces of the password for the next level - there are 4 of these in each level. Find them all and you'll get the password for that level. On the PSx you also have the option to save your game after each level, whereas on the PC you have to rely solely on the password system. I would've liked the game to follow the movie a bit closer as far as the bosses are concerned: in the movie, Hercules kills the Hydra by punching the side of a mountain, causing rocks to collapse onto the monster. You don't get to do this in the game - you just keep slicing off the Hydra's heads until its energy is drained and a boulder drops onto it automatically. Then there's the Cyclops, another pretty disappointing level: you just get to the end of an auto-scrolling level and you get to watch the scene from the movie where Herc defeats the Cyclops by throwing a flaming stick into his eye. That was some proper violence for a Disney movie - wouldn't it awesome if you got to do that in the game yourself ? The best of all the bosses is probably the centaur: you drain his life by jumping on his back and riding him and also uppercutting him right in the face when you win, like Herc did in the movie - so satisfying ! Also, although this is REALLY nitpicking now, how about being able to play as other characters, not just Hercules ? I know there's not much they could have done for Meg or Phil in the game, but seeing how they took some creative liberties by having Herc fight the Medusa, they could've probably come up with something (in greek mythology, Perseus is the one who fights Medusa, not Herc). A bit of trivia here, this game came out in 1997; 2 years later, in 1999, another Disney game hit the scene: Tarzan The Action Game. It's very similar in terms of gameplay to Hercules and it actually has other playable characters from the film, so we could cut Hercules some slack as far as the characters are concerned, since it came before Tarzan, thus allowing the producers to know what flaws should be ironed over in the future. Other than that, the game is awesome: great graphics, great soundtracks, nice sound effects, smooth controls and most importantly Danny DeVito ! Try it out !

Heres another Mario Forever game which someone requested: Project ♪, though I like to refer to it as Musical World or Project Melody, though the latter is already taken by a virtual anime Youtube persona, so I guess thats why they couldnt name it that :)) Anyway.....what can I say ? I was surprised: this game is actually REALLY hard ! Its one of the hardest Mario Forever fan games Ive played in a while ! Judging by the title, I was expecting this to be a laid-back game where the focus would be on the soundtracks and not so much on the difficulty and challenge, but no, its actually the other way around ! Not too many memorable soundtracks in this game (at least to me)... the difficulty on the other hand is WAY up there ! I wasnt able to complete it even after multiple tries: after eventually making it to Bowser (actually Jowser in this case), I got killed almost immediately and couldnt get to him a second time. On top of that, I also had to deal with the regular levels which I had to go through several times before even getting a chance to battle Jowser again, so eventually I had to admit defeat and admit the game is just too hard for me to handle, so what you get is a fail video of sorts.....
I sure hope there arent other worlds after the first one, because I may be missing out on some awesome stuff later on that I couldnt get to, but for now, thats all I can take...Danny Rulez ! Heres World Zero thats bundled with The Minus Worlds by Crist1919. It was still being worked on the first time playing it (link above), so level 2 was missing. Now its been added, so this world is officially complete. Theres really not much to say : its just a standard fan world - its playable, but not special, mainly because it uses standard themes and songs, so it just feels like something youve already played. A while back, I played two of the letter worlds by Mariovariable, World L and World K, which were part of Mario Forever Remake. Recently Ive been told that version 1.5 was released, which includes 2 more letter worlds : M and N, so of course I had to try them out. I wanted to do this alphabetically, so I checked out World M first. At first, its a pretty tough world, but at least the difficulty is not cheap, meaning that with practice youll be able to make it one step further every time and eventually see the end, which brings a great feel of accomplishment. Nothing too special about this world. It doesnt have as many rings as the last one, so staying in Super Sonic form is a bit of a challenge. Try to keep moving right to get to the end as quickly as possible while you still have some rings left, thats my only advice. My original walkthrough of SMB X-Over got removed due to copyright issues (or so I THINK, since even to this day Im still not entirely sure what the original reason for the flagging was), so I had to make a new video to replace it. Even after so many years, it didnt get old and I really enjoyed playing it again : the concept is original and the game itself is well executed, perfectly emulating the 5 games featured here. The only complaint I have is that the controls can be a bit stiff at times, particularly when you need to jump in rapid succession, as the game doesnt always respond - you sometimes tap the jump key and nothing happens, which may lead to a death when you have to get out of the way fast. This seems to be more prominent when playing as Mario, as the other non-title characters handle really well, or at least as good as they did in their original games, since I havent played Castlevania or Legend of Zelda for instance (yeah, I said it....sue me ! :)) ). Bottom line : this is an awesome game to try, especially if youre a fan of the golden age of the NES, when all these big games came out. Even if youre just a casual player, or youve never heard of some of these games before (just sayin), youll still enjoy this title and thats actually the whole beauty of it : that anybody can pick up and play it, even if you dont have previous experience in the featured games (or even in SMB for that matter) - the game is so intuitive and addicting that you should have no problem with it. Heres another game in the Softendo family: New Super Mario Forever. As you may have guessed from the title, its similar to New Super Mario Bros on the Wii, though I wouldnt call it a rip-off since it doesnt actually copy anything directly from the Wii game - it borrows the concept, enemies and powerups and reuses them in its own way to create something new. The overall concept is the same as Super Mario Bros 3 on the NES: same map format with 8 different worlds and 7 sons of Bowser you have to defeat, same enemies and even some levels look the same, so youll feel at home with this one. Graphically speaking, the game is decent, considering what it is, though the animations of Mario walking and jumping look a bit off and I noticed a lot of people making fun of this in the comments. Gameplay-wise, one thing I can say I dont like is how the screen takes too long to pan when you jump to the top - it freezes for about 1 second before it finally reorients. This could cost you a hit if you jump right into an enemy that you cant see - it should adjust instantly to keep Mario in the middle of the screen at all time. The music and sounds are very good as well: you get musical variety and the quality of the soundtracks is awesome. One thing they decided to change and I dont really appreciate is the sounds Mario makes when jumping (stuff like Ah ! Yeah ! HoUh !). Since its a platform game where you jump a lot, they tend to get irritating after a while and you cant turn them off - you have to turn off all other sound effects too. I would have much preferred the traditional jump sound effects of all the other games, or at least have an option to toggle the voice on and off, independent of the sound effects. Another thing that ruins what would otherwise be a great Mario fan game is the overwhelming amount of spelling and grammar errors - thought NES games were bad at this when they got ported from their japanese versions ? Well, look again: the word order is incorrect and many words are misspelled, making the messages incoherent and even confusing to read, especially in the early levels where youre given instructions on how to perform certain moves - I actually had to read a message twice before figuring out how to do the wall jump. Im aware the maker of the game is not a native English speaker, but couldnt he at least get someone to proof-read the game before releasing it to the public ? I kinda smell Google Translate here ! To be perfectly fair its not too much of a problem as far as playability is concerned, because its the gameplay that counts in Mario games and not so much the dialogues. If it were an RPG like Castlevania where you had to rely on clues and dialogues to progress, then yes, it would be a big issue indeed, but in an action-oriented game like this, we can let it slide. Other than that, theres no need to go into great detail about the game since its self explanatory - if you dont know how to play a Mario game then you shouldnt call yourself a gamer ! Aside from the F it gets in grammar, the game gets an overall A from Daniels Game Vault. Softendo pretty much did everything they could to recreate a Wii game on the PC, which is no easy task considering how complex it is, so for that I can only applaud them ! Well done ! A constant request Ive been getting is World 11 by Syzxchulun (the same guy who made Worlds 9 and 10 - you may want to check those out too), so here it is ! Theres no standalone version at the moment - it comes bundled with Mario Forever Remake, which is a collection of many other fan games created so far, like The Minus Worlds, The Letter Worlds, The Hardcore Worlds and Human Lab and a handful of others. This compilation belongs to TheMarioVariable, btw - definitely worth checking out if you want all these fan-made worlds, but dont feel like hunting them down one by one. So anyway, back to World 11: its not bad as far as the overall quality is concerned, but the word of the day is, once again, DIFFICULT, just like Syzxchuluns other worlds ! It has lots of enemies (especially hammer bros !), tricky jumps and even a maze in the castle. Youll obviously get your ass handed to you at first, but after a while, youll gain enough experience to finally beat it, just like I did, despite the lack of continues. It took a fuckin long time and many many many tries, but I finally got it ! For this reason, I ended up with a hard drive full of footage I wanted to share with you, so I threw it all in to give you a bit of a movie, with no cuts or edits (this also serves as a bit of behind the scenes).
