Australian Reptile Park | Hercules Sets Record For BIGGEST Funnel Web Spider | Australian Reptile Park @AustralianReptilePark | Uploaded January 2024 | Updated October 2024, 5 days ago.
Recent rainy weather combined with intensely humid weather has provided the perfect conditions for funnel-web spiders to thrive. This week, the Australian Reptile Park received the BIGGEST male funnel web spider they have ever had donated to the antivenom program. Measuring in at a whopping 7.9cm, this newest arrival dubbed ‘Hercules’, has fangs that could pierce through a human fingernail.
The behemoth of a spider was handed in to Newcastle’s John Hunter Hospital, one of the Park’s spider drop-off locations. Upon collection, the Spiders team at the Reptile Park were quick to realise that this was the biggest male funnel-web spider they’d received. Dubbed ‘Hercules’ for his enormous size, this spider has beaten its predecessor, ‘Colossus’, who was named the Park’s largest male funnel-web spider handed in back in 2018.
