Paula was extremely surprised to see a Southern Cassowary (Casuarius casuarius) turn up at her house in South Mission Beach, Queensland. Although they were clearly very keen to chat about their favourite portable bird guide, she did the right thing and kept her distance.
If threatened, cassowaries can inflict serious injuries by kicking with their large clawed feet. If, like Paula, you see one, never approach or feed them.
