Heino Eller (1887-1970) was an Estonian composer and teacher, arguably the most influential figure in 20th-century Estonian music. Mostly known outside Estonia for orchestral works like "Kodumaine viis" (Homeland Melody") for string orchestra and the tone poem "Koit" ("Dawn"), Eller developed a highly individual style with influences from Impressionism, Expressionism, and Estonian folk music. He was equally influential as a pedagogue and taught some of Estonia's most renowned composers, including Eduard Tubin, Arvo Pärt, Lepo Sumera, Eduard Oja, and Jaan Rääts.

The "13 Pieces on Estonian Motifs", composed in 1940, are some of Eller's most notable piano works and are characteristic of his mature style.
