Chemical gardens are inorganic hollow precipitation structures and usually grow in the upward direction because their density is lower than the density of the surrounding solution (here sodium silicate). In this experiment, the densities are reversed and the tubular chain of precipitation nodules slowly fills the reaction vessel from the bottom up.
