This line works really well for my characters Nadarakku((turtleneck dude)) and Kuregure((his sister))

Basically they aren't human, as should be obvious
and they both have a flower.
The flower is a physical representation of their hearts
When they believe they've found someone close enough to trust and love
They give them their flower.
Kure is exceedingly trusting and tries to give it to basically everyone, and Nada has to stop her. She strikes a nerve, saying "just cause your girlfriend was shit doesn't mean my friends are." and Nada gets mad
cause he had a girlfriend who he gave the flower to, only for her to tear of the petals
aaaand since the flower is a physicaly representation of their emotions
He now has terrible depression
