Joseph Conrad's Heart of Darkness is considered one of the greatest works of English literature, however the novel failed to gain any critical acclaim or notoriety or during his lifetime.
It wasn't until many years after his death did Heart of Darkness begin to become a staple in English literature education at both the high school and collegiate level, and since then the book has also been highly controversial.
Proponents of Heart of Darkness consider it to be one of the greatest indictments of colonialism in Africa, while others say it's racist, dehumanizing, and problematic.
So what is the truth?
