A major update to the universal definition of myocardial infarction (heart attack) could change how doctors identify and classify heart attacks. The Fifth Universal Definition of Myocardial Infarction, developed jointly by the European Society of Cardiology, American College of Cardiology, American Heart Association and World Heart Federation, replaces the previous numbered Type 1–5 system with three broader categories: primary, secondary and procedure-related myocardial infarction.
