When you + someone you love were hearing the exact same conversation... completely differently. 🥹
This moment during our therapy intensive honestly blew my mind.
I was sitting there getting excited because I could literally SEE something shifting in Ryan. I wasn’t praising him for “doing a good job.” I wasn’t trying to tell him he had finally earned my approval.
I was just genuinely excited because I felt like a new door had opened for him. 🩷
But that’s not what he heard.
What he heard was... “Now I have to be this version of myself all the time... or I’ll disappoint you.”
Oh man... I think that’s one of the biggest gifts therapy has given us.
Not better communication.
Better understanding.
It’s helped us realize that sometimes the reaction in front of us isn’t actually about what’s happening right now... it’s about something much older.
And once you can see that... it changes the conversation. 🥹
It changes how you listen.
It changes how you love.
And it creates so much more compassion for the person sitting across from you. 🫶🏼
