In this workshop, attendees view a documentary (starting at 9:00) by Craig Womack and Steve Bransford who explore the continuance of the Creek language, spoken by tribal people in Oklahoma and Florida, by focusing on the life of the Creek community leader, feminist, and activist, the Rev. Rosemary McCombs Maxey, a UCC minister of the Kansas-Oklahoma Conference.

Rosemary joins us for conversation (starting at 54:05) about the Muscogee Creek language with Kahu Kenneth Makuakāne, pastor of Kawaiaha‘o Church, who connects it with ‘Ōlelo Hawai‘i, the Hawaiian language.

She says: “We Mvskoke people use the Hawaiian ‘nesting’ language model… I also follow the Mauna Kea movement. And I remember the kupuna who made their way to our home so we could visit the Hawaiian prisoners who were incarcerated here in Oklahoma.”
