The Sami are one of the world’s indigenous peoples and one of Sweden’s five official national minorities.
One old Sami tradition is joik – a vocal art form, often without words, used to keep the memory of a place, an event or a person alive, or as a way to express emotions. This is Maxida Märak's loving joik to her daughter.
Between 1913 and 1915, Karl Tirén – railway station inspector and joik collector – travelled across northern Sweden recording hundreds of joiks on his phonograph. In 2025, his collection was added to UNESCO’s Memory of the World Register – the first time an indigenous cultural expression received this recognition.
The culture, traditions and languages of the Sami – along with those of Sweden’s other national minorities (Jews, Roma, Swedish Finns and Tornedalians) – have special protection under Swedish law.
