It’s that time of year when we all think about staying well. The good news is that there are many healthy ways we can support our immune health. As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I take a holistic approach to nutrition, health and wellness. That means looking at the body as a whole and how each habit and food choice can impact our health overall. Today I am sharing 5 ways to support immune health and I want to thank Life Extension for partnering with me for today’s video, which makes it possible for me to create and share free educational content such as this.

1. Foods High in Vitamin C: Vitamin C is well-known to support immune health. Load up your grocery cart with these Vitamin C-rich foods:

Kiwi
Bell Pepper
Broccoli
Brussels Sprouts
Strawberries
Tomatoes
Lemons
Oranges
Papaya
Cantaloupe
Parsley
Black Currants

2. Quality Immune-Supporting Supplements: As a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist, I will always recommend trying to meet your nutritional needs first through real, whole foods. Supplements are just that—a supplement to your diet. We cannot supplement our way out of a bad diet that is composed of highly processed foods. So aim to eat mostly real, whole foods and then add in supplements as a support to your health. The following supplements are my favorite for immune health:

N-Acetyl-L-Cysteine (NAC): dpbolvw.net/click-101001863-15635064 NAC supplements encourage healthy glutathione levels—so you can stay at your best. Glutathione is a potent antioxidant and plays a key role in detoxification. NAC can also support liver health & function.

Vitamin C: anrdoezrs.net/click-101001863-15635065 There are times when a boost of vitamin C can be very beneficial! This vitamin C from Life Extension is great because it is a liposomal form of vitamin C. In short, liposomal vitamin C is better absorbed by the body than conventional formulas and stays in your system for up to 24 hours.

Zinc Caps: dpbolvw.net/click-101001863-15635069 Zinc is a mineral that also supports immune health. Zinc plays an important role in our health, including immune system support, supporting the barrier of our skin, cardiovascular and neurological health, and helping to maintain vision.

Life Extension’s zinc formulation combines the highly bioavailable OptiZinc® with zinc citrate to provide a potent 50 milligram dose of zinc in each capsule. OptiZinc® contains one of the most absorbable forms of zinc, zinc methionate, which has superior bioavailability.

Garlic: dpbolvw.net/click-101001863-15635071
Garlic has health-supporting properties. I love adding garlic to my cooking for the flavor and health boost! This garlic supplement can also provide cardiovascular support, help enhance immune response, help with cellular detoxification, and support healthy platelet function.

3. Sleep: When we sleep our body has time to rest, restore and rejuvenate. When we are well rested, our immune system is able to operate at its best. Aim for 7-9 hours of sleep per night. One tip to sleep better at night is to get outside in the morning! Morning light can support the body’s natural circadian rhythm, our sleep-wake cycle, and regulate melatonin production, the hormone that makes us sleepy when it’s dark.

4. DIY Wellness Tonic! Get the recipe here: healthygrocerygirl.com/wellness-tonic-for-immune-support

5. Low Sugar / Real Whole Foods: Eating a high-added sugar diet is not beneficial or recommended if strong immune health is your goal. Aim to limit or avoid foods with added sugar. Added sugar will be listed in the ingredient list of packaged foods as cane sugar, brown rice syrup, corn syrup, and more.  Instead, focus on eating a variety of real, whole foods including fresh fruits and vegetables, nuts, seeds, legumes, herbs, spices and quality protein—and don’t forget to hydrate with filtered water and herbal teas! These foods will provide vitamins and minerals that the body needs to support a healthy immune system.
