Hey friends, welcome to another episode where we explore topics that can help shape a better life for all of us. Today, I want to touch on a subject that's close to my heart—pet therapy and its impact on those battling PTSD. Whether it's a wagging tail or a soothing purr, animals have an indescribable way of reaching our hearts and bringing comfort, particularly to those who've experienced trauma. So, let's think about it. You've had a rough day or a stressful week, and then you come home to a loyal pet who is frantically happy to see you. In that moment, stress melts away, right? Now imagine that same comfort for someone dealing with PTSD. Research shows that pet therapy is an incredibly effective form of coping for many individuals. It reduces stress levels, boosts mood, and can enhance mental fortitude. PTSD or Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder affects millions globally, particularly veterans, first responders, and even survivors of abuse. Traditional therapy can be effective, but sometimes it doesn't reach those raw, tender spots that trauma can create. That's where our furry friends come into play. There are so many inspiring stories about pet therapy, but one that stands out is from a shelter in Colorado that pairs rescued dogs with veterans. Many vets speak about building emotional strength and forming a deep, healing relationship with their pups. The companionship provides a sense of purpose and belonging that might otherwise be lost amid the chaos of PTSD. Now, you might wonder how pet therapy works. Essentially, being around animals releases endorphins, which help manage stress and promote psychological resilience. Imagine feeling anxious or emotionally fraught, only to feel an instant calming touch from a therapy dog or cat. The physical contact, combined with the unconditional love offered by the pet, can help break down emotional walls and enable healing to begin. Moreover, the routine care of an animal—feeding, grooming, walking—can also instill a sense of responsibility and structure, vital for anyone dealing with PTSD. For the individual, this kind of engagement fosters emotional intelligence and personal growth. Believe it or not, even those who claim not to be "animal people" have found peace and healing through pet therapy. The ripples of positive change that can come from tiny acts of compassion are incredible. For those interested in exploring more about such transformative experiences, I recommend checking out Ripple Effects: Transforming Tiny Traumas . It's a compelling read that reveals how small, caring acts can dismantle emotional barriers. Purchase the book now! In today's fast-paced world, there's a quiet revolution happening in the realm of health and wellness. As we become more conscious of our mental health and emotional wellbeing, incorporating pet therapy might be one of those pivotal steps that help people find balance. So, next time you snuggle with your dog or play with your cat, remember it's not just a leisure activity. You might be part of a stress management movement that's fostering emotional healing one pet at a time. Thank you for joining me today. Until next time, remember the calming, healing power that a wagging tail or gentle paw can bring into your life.

![#296: Africa’s Ascent: What Drove Toastmasters Growth – Frank Tsuro
[28:53] Across parts of Africa, Toastmasters has seen double- and even triple-digit growth over a 10-year period—at a time when global membership has slightly declined. So what changed—and why did it stick? Frank Tsuro shares his experience, what contributed to that growth, and what others can learn—while offering a closer look at Africa and Toastmasters across the continent.
Frank puts the growth into perspective, explaining that it was years in the making—built on long-term thinking, leadership continuity, and a willingness to expand beyond familiar territory.
He also points to a shift in how growth was approached—moving beyond simply adding clubs to thinking more strategically about how they support each other. That helped address one of the key challenges he describes: isolation, where single clubs struggled to sustain momentum on their own.
At the same time, Toastmasters met a real need. In many parts of Africa, people conduct business in English or French—even when those aren’t their first languages. It provided an accessible way to build communication skills, connect across cultures, and invest in personal growth—while opening the door for more people to step into leadership.
You can read Paul Sterman’s article, Africa’s Ascent: The continent has soared in Toastmasters growth, visibility, and performance, in the April 2026 issue of the Toastmaster magazine. You can also check out Family Ties and Toastmasters: Joining a Club Together Strengthens Bonds and Boosts Communication (https://www.toastmasters.org/magazine/magazine-issues/2025/december/family-ties-in-toastmasters) in the December 2025 issue.
Listeners will hear…
• What drove double- and triple-digit Toastmasters growth across parts of Africa
• Why a multi-year plan created momentum that carried across leadership teams
• How one leadership visit helped shift the trajectory of an entire region
• Why growing areas—not just individual clubs—leads to more sustainable success
• How isolation can impact clubs—and what helps them stay strong
• How younger leaders contributed to the growth and energy across the continent
Frank’s perspective reminds us that meaningful growth comes from consistency, shared vision, and people willing to step forward.
Along the way, it also offers a deeper appreciation for the diversity and potential across Africa—and the role Toastmasters can play.
