Why are Israeli settlers building communities deep inside occupied Palestinian territory in the West Bank, and what drives the settler ideology?
This documentary investigates the Israeli settlement movement in the West Bank, one of the most contentious and obstructive forces in the Israeli–Palestinian conflict.
Israeli settlements are built on land seized by Israel in the 1967 Six-Day War. Most of the international community considers them illegal under international law, yet they have expanded for decades. More than 700,000 settlers now live in the West Bank and East Jerusalem, in fortified hilltop communities overlooking Palestinian towns and villages. These settlements carve up Palestinian land, restrict freedom of movement, and entrench military occupation.
I cycled across the West Bank to document the Israeli occupation and gained access to Har Bracha, a religious Zionist settlement. I spoke with settlers to understand their ideology, hear their justifications for living on land recognised internationally as Palestinian, and examine how those arguments can be challenged. I learned how religious belief, nationalism, and security narratives are used to legitimise settlement expansion, and how settlers and Palestinians live under two separate legal systems: Israeli civil law for settlers, martial law for Palestinians.
This documentary covers the history of Israeli settlements since 1967, their role in preventing a Palestinian state, and the difference between settlements and outposts. It looks at the strategic geography of hilltop settlements and the control they give over the West Bank, the exploitation of Palestinian workers, settler violence and its impact on Palestinian communities, and historical justifications such as the Balfour Declaration and Jewish persecution that are invoked to defend the occupation. It also examines the international and Christian Zionist support that sustains the settlement enterprise.
Israeli settlements violate the Fourth Geneva Convention, which prohibits an occupying power from transferring its own civilian population into the territory it occupies. However, successive Israeli governments have supported settlement growth through funding, military protection, and legal recognition of unauthorised outposts. Settlements control water resources, farmland, and road networks, further entrenching Israel’s hold over the West Bank.
Palestinians in the West Bank face home demolitions, land confiscations, and movement restrictions enforced by checkpoints, settler-only roads, and the separation barrier. Violence from settlers, including attacks on farmers, property destruction, and harassment, is often met with little or no legal consequence, reinforcing a system of impunity.
Settlements are one of the biggest obstacles to peace. They fragment Palestinian territory into disconnected enclaves, and undermine a two-state solution. For Palestinians, they mean land theft, dispossession, and the continuation of a decades-long struggle for self-determination. For many settlers, they are a fulfilment of biblical prophecy and a non-negotiable part of Israel’s future, but for Palestinians, they are part of the ongoing denial of Palestinian self-determination.
