Edward lives under a freeway overpass in New Orleans.
When he was 11, a train accident took his arm. Since then, he’s been on and off the streets.
Right now, he hasn’t received disability for 3 months because he lost his ID. Without it, he can’t access the support he qualifies for. So he survives by flying a sign on an exit ramp.
Edward says he’s “messed up.” He’s living with HIV and hepatitis A, B, and C. He’s been in and out of every hospital in New Orleans, over and over. Each time, he’s treated… and discharged right back to the streets.
Then the cycle repeats.
This isn’t just a personal tragedy. It’s a system failure.
We all pay for the emergency room visits, the hospital stays, the ambulance rides. But we’re not investing in what would actually break the cycle: housing and support.
Edward’s three wishes are simple:
To live a long life.
To have a little money.
To eat every day.
That’s it.
If we’re serious about solving homelessness, we need real solutions that work. Housing, healthcare, and a path forward.
