In 1955, Jack Gilbert Graham placed a dynamite bomb in his mother’s suitcase before she boarded United Airlines Flight 629 bombing from Denver to Portland. The explosion destroyed the plane shortly after takeoff, killing all 44 people aboard. Graham’s motive was largely financial: his mother had recently taken out life insurance policies naming him as beneficiary. Investigators traced the bombing to him through bomb materials and witness testimony. He confessed, was convicted of murder, and executed in Colorado’s gas chamber in 1957. The case shocked the public and led to stronger airline security and tighter controls on airport life-insurance sales.
