At the beginning of the 20th century, Afghanistan was not fully independent, considering its foreign policy was controlled by the British in India; but its rulers were free to act however they wanted inside of the country. The Afghan ruler, Habibullah wanted to be rewarded with sovereignty through positive relations; but his nation sought total independence by any means necessary. Despite this tension between ruler and ruled, Habibullah opened Afghanistan up to the rest of the world as he introduced modernizing reforms. However, he did not realize he was sowing the seeds of his own downfall, as powerful forces within the royal court, like his son Crown Prince Amanullah, used these reforms to further the goal of removing British influence once and for all. Join me as I explore the reign of one of Afghanistan’s least remembered rulers, who actually began the modernization process of the country.
