Kojima Productions explains why Hayter was replaced. They do not address him by name. Hayter is obviously not happy about it. Some may say he's being childish (on Twitter and so forth), but I take his side on the whole situation. He has played Snake for 17 years. It's wrong to close the saga without him, but I still love you Kojima.

They say he was replaced because of the Fox Engine's capabilities and they needed an actor who could really emote in their facial expressions. I honestly don't think Kiefer is as capable of emoting as much as Hayter is and I think we'd have a better game with Hayter's passion poured into the role.
