The Haynes #clarinet sometimes called the “Thermo-Clarinet,” is an interesting footnote in clarinet history.
Built by the famed Wm. S. Haynes Company, known for making some of the finest flutes in the world, the Haynes Clarinet was an attempt to improve upon the traditional wood clarinet and its sensitivity to temperature changes.
This instrument features a double-walled design with a gas reservoir between the two walls and a pair of valves that can be opened or closed. The idea was that warm air could be introduced into the space between the walls and then sealed in, helping to keep the temperature more stable.
Made of solid silver and pitched in A, this instrument is a very rare and fascinating piece of musical history!
