University of Hawaii soccer freshman forward Olivia Dianda made program history Monday, earning Mountain West Freshman of the Week honors in the Rainbow Wahine’s first weekly conference award since joining the league.
The California native received the recognition after scoring the first two goals of her collegiate career Saturday, helping Hawaii secure its first victory of the season with a 2-1 win over Idaho.
Through Hawaii’s first four matches, Dianda has scored twice on five total shots, with both goals coming in the victory over the Vandals.
Dianda said the transition to the collegiate level has required her to adjust to a faster pace of play.
“The game is definitely different at the college level,” Dianda said. “I just did my best to work as hard as I possibly could and just pick up the pace because the speed of play is way higher than all the levels I played at before.”
She credited Hawaii’s training environment and teammates for helping her make the adjustment.
“At training, it definitely helps because we play at a super fast pace, so it helps me get ready for the games,” Dianda said. “I feel like my teammates have prepared me very well for the level that we play at.”
Dianda also said her teammates have helped make the transition to college and Hawaii a smooth one.
“Hawaii is just a lovely place to be in no matter what,” she said. “But definitely my teammates are the best part of it. They make me feel very welcome and they’re all like sisters to me, even right off the bat. We’re just a very hardworking team in general, so we all just have that hunger to win no matter what.”
