SHREK 5 CONTROVERSY
It's one of the world's most beloved animated franchises, so it didn't take fans long to notice that the new animation style looks different to the original films, and people are divided. Many complain that characters now look too realistic, and that the new design looks a lot like it was done by AI, even though it wasn’t. Others reckon it's not that big of a deal and that it's pretty normal for an animation to change over time.
DUBAI SOCIAL MEDIA BAN
The United Arab Emirates has become the latest country to introduce a social media ban. It's the first Arab country to restrict social media for young people under the age of 15. 15 and 16-year-olds will be allowed to use social media, but there'll be some safeguards, including restrictions on interacting with strangers online and content and screen time management tools. Social media companies now have 12 months to remove underage accounts in the area, or face penalties.
COCKATOO-PROOF BINS
Here in Lorne, two worlds have long tried to co-exist: the humans, and the creature, with its beautiful eyes and a love of rummaging through bins! Yeah, sulphur-crested cockatoos are pretty good at opening the lids. They don't really clean up after themselves either. You see, bins are made so bin day can be as smooth as possible, and so even Josh can open them. But it's also easy for the birds, and around town, locals have had to get creative to keep the birds away. Around the country, others have also tried all kinds of things to stop them, but the birds are cunning, which is why the blokes at the local men's shed have been toiling away to find a more permanent fix, landing on this nifty recycled plastic design, which screws onto the bins, meaning the birds have nowhere to stand to lift the lids. Their invention has taken off, and they've already sold 500 of them, which many hope will get them closer to humans and birds co-existing in tidy peace.
ALIEN MESSAGES
You've probably asked yourself, “is there other life out there somewhere?” Anyways, people have been out there searching for the answer since the late 1950s, and it's not just people like this, actual scientists too! And a new study by the SETI Institute suggests alien signals, which travel through space as radio waves, get scrambled by their own stars before they ever reach us, and aliens could have been talking to us the whole time! Uh, well, maybe. You see, for years, scientists have been looking for narrow spikes in radio waves that look like this, because they're unlikely to be produced by natural cosmic processes. In other words, probably an alien source. But the SETI institute have now found that the radio waves can be spread out by space weather, like plasma winds, into a wider and less obvious signal. So, basically, they reckon it may not be that alien signals aren't there, but that stellar activity could be distorting radio signals! While it isn't slam-dunk evidence that aliens are out there, it's, uh, something.
