Susie and Chris run into one another at a late-night diner. Both are getting takeout -- and both have just hooked up earlier in the evening, making for an awkward interaction.

But the pair decides to spend their meal together, and as they chat, they bond over their reasons for being there. They realize there may be more between them than just physical attraction. But before their unexpected date plays out, Susie must grapple with a well of deep emotion, as well as an unexpected interruption.

Written by Cal McLean, who co-directed the script with Alexandra Nell, this short romantic drama has a subtle simplicity in both its storytelling and its craftsmanship. It begins with a clear and straightforward situation, of a man and woman running into one another at a late-night diner after a one-night stand earlier that evening. They're both surprised to see one another after assuming they'd never encounter each other again.

Their second encounter plays out in beautifully natural dialogue that captures the nuances of this nascent relationship, rendered in lived-in, muted visuals that create a tinge of being hermetically sealed off from the rest of the world. Between Susie and Chris, there's embarrassment and awkwardness, but there is also vulnerability, humor and a tentative, fragile question between them, wondering if they would be suited for something more.

Actors Takia Morrison and George Vickers-Willis capture the many layers of this would-be, could-be couple, both with an easygoing connection underneath the momentary awkwardness. They've been physically intimate already, but watching emotional intimacy develop between them is a sweet prospect.

But when we as viewers have settled into the pleasures of a romantic story, HASH BROWNS throws us a curveball that recalibrates both its seemingly straightforward genre and our understanding of the situation at hand. It reveals more to Morrison's performance than meets the eye, and a new layer of narrative that changes the meaning and resonance of what we've been watching. It makes for a fascinating twist, one that isn't just for shock value, but invites us to consider how the seeds of love were planted -- and what they eventually will grow into. The film has a compact, economical run-time, but with one breathtaking shift, it creates deeper shadows underneath the humble, elegant simplicity of its style and storytelling, hinting at a larger, more tragic tale than meets the eye.
