Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone has an outstanding orchestral film score, and his mastery of woodwinds is something that really sets John Williams apart.
In this video we'll explore five different ways to use winds to enhance orchestration and write more vibrant and colorful orchestral music.
In Hedwig's Theme, John Williams uses an an orchestra with "Winds in 3s" which means there are three instruments for each family of the woodwinds. Piccolo, 2 flutes, 2 oboes, English horn, 2 Bb clarinets, Bass clarinet, 2 bassoons, contrabassoon (and even an extra doublings with Eb clarinet)!
